COURSE SYLLABUS FOR

ARMY JUNIOR RESERVE OFFICERS TRAINING CORPS (AJROTC)

SCHOOL YEAR (SY) 2014-2015

1. INTRODUCTION. The purpose of Caver JROTC is to motivateyoung people to be better citizens by developing wellness, building character,and facilitating their graduation. JROTCalso satisfies Physical Education requirements by conducting physical educationand teaching lifelong wellness. CaverJROTC develops physically fit and successful graduates with sound character andmoral judgment through professional studies, leadership theory and application,disciplined training, community service, citizenship, and teamwork.

2. CURRICULUM. The JROTC curriculum is aligned with McRelstandards (http://www.mcrel.org) usingcontemporary teaching methods and technology.
   1. Thereare four levels of experience within JROTC, organized into Learn, Education,Training (LET) groups by JROTC year group. First year JROTC Cadets are LET 1, second year are LET 2, third year areLET 3 and fourth year are LET 4.
   2. CaverJROTC conducts four types of instruction.

(1) PhysicalEducation (PE). We perform cardiovascularPE two days a week. It consists of groupled aerobic and strength building exercises or sports. PE is focused on achieving and maintainingFitnessgram standards.

(2) Academics. Academics are performed two days a week in aclassroom setting using the JROTC Curriculum Manager (CM). CM is a state of the art multimedia suitethat uses audio, video, and written information to facilitate informationlearning and retention. Topics include:1) Citizenship, 2) Civics, 3) Economics, 4) Geography, 5) Health, 6) LanguageArts, 7) Life Skills, 8) Life Work, 9) Self-Regulation, 10) Thinking andReasoning, 11) U.S. History, and 12) Working with others.

(3) Inspection andDrill. We perform inspection and drill oneday a week. Cadets wear their JROTCuniform, are inspected by their cadet leadership, and learn/review basicdrill. These exercises enable Cadets todemonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns while learning theimportance of attention to detail and teamwork.

(4) Leadership Lab. LET 2 through LET 4 Cadets are required to participatein the Leadership Lab after school. LET1 Cadets may volunteer for Leadership Lab. Leadership Lab allows Cadets the opportunity to prepare for theirintegrated curricular activities (see paragraph 6 below).

c. Gradesare recorded every four weeks, synchronized with the School of Business andLeadership grading schedule.

3. SCHEDULE. The normal weekly schedule for AJROTC isindicated below. PE is moved to Tuesdaysif Monday is a holiday.

4. UNIFORMS. AJROTC uniforms are loaned (issued) to allCadets at no cost. Uniforms include jacket,shirt, pants, shoes, headgear, socks, belt, earned decorations and awards.

1. Responsibilities. Cadets are required to maintain uniforms andreturn them at the end of the school year. Cadets and their guardians will be held financially liable for lost ordamaged items. Male Cadets are requiredto provide and wear a white undershirt under the issued uniform shirt. Uniform trousers must be dry cleaned, machinewashing ruins them.

2. UniformWear. Cadets are required to wear theuniform one day each week on inspection day, or the next school day after anabsence. Cadets participating inofficial events requiring uniform wear prior to or after uniform day areexcluded from the requirement. Participation in after school or off campus activity may require uniformwear.

3. PhysicalEducation (PE). Cadets must provide and wearappropriate athletic clothing on PE days; uniforms are not required. Athletic gear must allow freedom of movement forlegs and arms, cover the torso, chest, upper arms and upper legs, and be absorbent. "Tank top" style shirts are notapproved. Shoes must be designed forathletics, support the arch and foot, and cover the toe.

5. GRADES. Final grades are calculated by consolidatingphysical education, academics, inspections and drill, and leadership scores.
   1. PhysicalEducation (PE). Cadets only need tosuit-up and participate to receive top PE scores.

(1) Suit-Up. Cadets must change into their PE uniformafter attendance is taken. Failure tosuit-up will be noted in the grade book. Scores drop for non-suit-ups during the grading period. Cadets are still required to perform PE intheir school clothes if they fail to bring appropriate PE clothes.

(2) Participate. Each Cadet is expected to give 100% and willbe evaluated on effort rather than performance. Failure to participate will be noted in the grade book fornon-participation with a reduced score.

1. Academic. Academic grading is based on homework, exams,projects, and essays. Exams will beadministered electronically via Curriculum Manager or written True/False,multiple-choice, fill in the blanks, matching and essay questions. Cadets are responsible for coordinating withthe instructor to complete missed exams due to authorized absence within oneweek of the exam. Late homework is notcounted unless otherwise indicated by the instructor.

2. Leadership(Merits). Cadets earn merits byparticipating in community and school support events, and for performance aboverequirements. Cadets lose merits(demerits) by failing to comply with clear requirements. 10% of the leadership score for LET 2-4Cadets is based upon Leadership Lab attendance. Cadets in battalion or team leadership positions, staff, or projectofficer positions will earn extra credit.

3. Inspectionsand Drill. Cadets are required to weartheir JROTC uniforms on inspection and/or special event days. Cadets who fail to wear their uniform on thespecified day must wear it the next school day. Cadets will be issued demerits for each daythe uniform is not worn and the non-compliance noted in the grade book. Cadets will not wear uniforms on the daysindicated below.

(1) Uniformshave not yet been issued. Cadets will"dress for success" if uniforms are unavailable due to non-standard body sizes.

(2) A"Dress for Success" day is scheduled. Studentswear business attire on "dress for success" days. Proper attire includes button-up shirt, tie,slacks, and formal shoes, as well as skirt and blouse.

6. INTEGRATEDCURRICULAR ACTIVITIES. JROTC provides Cadets many opportunities tovolunteer and participate in after school and weekend activities. Ribbons and/or Merits are awarded to Cadetswho volunteer for activities. Cadetsmust maintain at least a 2.0 school GPA for the immediate past and currentquarter to participate in activities.
   1. CommunitySupport Events. Caver JROTC providesopportunities to perform volunteer community service on weekends andholidays. Service is documented andMerits awarded.
   2. SchoolSupport Events. The San Diego HighEducational Complex relies on Caver JROTC to render honors to our nation. JROTC Cadets raise and lower the NationalColors (U.S. Flag) daily. The JROTCColor Guard renders honors during every home football game. The Corps of Cadets perform a Half-Timeceremony during the Homecoming Football game.
   3. TeamEvents. Cadets have the opportunity tovolunteer for Honor Guard, Color Guard, Drill Team, Cadet Challenge, and theJunior Leadership Academic Bowl.
   4. Leadership. Leadership activities/positions include battalion,company and platoon command, staff, project officer, team commander, platoonleader and sergeant, and squad leader.
   5. SocialEvents. Caver JROTC Cadets are providedthe opportunity to participate in the Brigade Cadet Picnic in the fall and theBrigade JROTC Cadet Ball in the Spring. Both events are voluntary and have costs associated with them.
   6. JuniorCadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC). Committedand qualified Cadets are provided the opportunity to participate in JCLC (aka"Summer Camp") for a nominal fee.
7. TRAINING SCHEDULES. Weekly Training Schedules are produced by theCadet Battalion S-3 and is posted on the bulletin board. Instructors post lesson plans on the CaverWebsite (www.sandi.net/domain/2616).
8. MINIMUM GPAPOLICY. Cadets must maintain a minimum school GradePoint Average (GPA) of 2.0 without any failing grades in the current andimmediate past academic quarter to be considered for promotion or selected forany leadership position. Cadets whodon't maintain a 2.0 GPA or greater will be placed on academic probation. Cadets who remain on probation after asemester will be reduced one grade for each semester they remain onprobation. Cadet officers who remain onprobation longer than a semester will be reduced to the last enlisted gradeheld.

10. FOCUS. Caver JROTC is focused on assisting Cadets develop skills that lead tothe goals of high school graduation and post-graduation success. JROTC instructors are committed to thesegoals and are prepared to assist every Cadet achieve it. Cadets with a sincere desire to work hard toachieve these goals will always receive the best s upport, guidance, anddirection possible.
